Put your best smile forward with porcelain veneers

Veneers are thin wafer-like structures made up of porcelain. They are made to cover the frontal side of the teeth to improve their appearance. They help you to get rid of the minor imperfections of your teeth, such as spacing, crowding, chipping, cracks in the tooth, and discoloration.

What is the procedure involved in bonding a veneer to your tooth?

Veneers are custom-made to fit perfectly on a tooth. The dentist takes a high precise mold of the tooth as a reference for fabricating the veneer at the dental laboratory. Before that, the tooth is buffed and shaped to make space for placing the veneer. Hence, a thin layer of enamel will be removed from the tooth surface so that the veneer doesn't add to the thickness of the tooth.

It would take a few days for the veneer to be fabricated. On the second visit, the tooth would be thoroughly cleaned and roughened up with the help of an etching solution. Dental adhesives are used to bond the veneer onto the tooth surface. After carefully placing the veneer on the tooth, excess adhesive will be removed. A curing light is used to harden it and firmly bond the veneer. After this, the veneer is checked for fit and comfort, and the bite is evaluated. It is then polished and made to match the shade of the remaining teeth.

How to care for your veneers?

You must keep in mind that the veneers aren't as strong as your natural teeth. Hence, biting hard objects such as nuts, ice, etc. could damage the veneer. It is advisable to cut down on the consumption of beverages such as tea, coffee, colored soft drinks, red wine, etc. They could lead to the staining of the veneers. Chewing tobacco should also be avoided. Regular dental visits help your dentist monitor your veneers, and any damage to them can be repaired.
